Unit 1

FACE: When wedging the shape of the clay kind of looked like Sid the Sloths head, so that is where I got my idea. After wedging the clay, I cut a small chunk and started to make a hammer-head like shape. Once I had the shape, I smoothed out the front of the clay to make his big nose. Since Sid is a cartoon character, his eyes and teeth stand out, so that's what I did on the clay. I used the scoring tool to attach the eyes and the teeth. For his nostrils I indented the clay with the wood tool. After I have successfully made his face, I did a under glaze before him entering the kiln.

Stamp

IMG_6294_edited_edited.jpg

I took a small piece of clay and pinched the bottom of it to create a handle. Then I flattened the thicker side to make a flat surface for the stamp part. Then I slip and scored a thin piece of clay to create a G.

Pinch pots

IMG_6309 (1).jpg

I used the pinch pot method, then I used little pieces of clay and I molded it into little legs for the turtle shape. After I slip and scored the pieces together. I did have some leg breakage, but it was slipped and scored back on again. Then I added a lid to this turtle pinch pot, I parked where the base of the pot would be on the lid so it could rest easily on top. Then I under-glazed it. I did leave the inside untouched before firing it. After it was fired, I used the exploding crystal glaze, and used a clear glaze everywhere else and fired it one last time. Then the plant turtle pinch pot was finished.

2 pinch pots put together

IMG_6374 (1).jpg

This is when I created two pinch pots then slipped and scored them together. I felt like creating this oval shape into a pumpkin. I cut out the eyes and mouth with a knife, like you would on a normal pumpkin. Eventually I made a lid for this pumpkin. Once it was bone dry, I used sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots and I under glazed it. When fired, I used a clear glaze to finish off the pumpkin.

Small Sculpture

IMG_6375.jpg

This was a duck I made, I made its head, then the body. Before slipping and scoring the head to the body. I hollowed out the body a little to make sure it was not a thick ball of clay, because Ms. Thompson would not approve of that. After the head was attached I waited for it to be bone dry, then under glazed it. Sadly, someone had knocked over my duck and it died.

Unit 3

Slab Mold

Plan

I wedged my clay and made it into a slab, then I placed it over a bowl mold, then I used a loop tool to carve a flower-like design into the clay while it was green wear. Once leather hard, I took it off the mold.

Outcome

It ended up flopping a little and was not looking like how I wanted it to look.

Improvements

Next Time I need to wait until it is bone dry to take off the mold. I also need to be more patient.

Coil Bowl

IMG_6446 (1).jpg
Plan

I wanted to create a bunch of weird twists and coils and then combine together. I made a slab for the base of the bowl, When I added each coil I slipped and scored everything and then smoothed the inside of the bowl and repeated.

Outcome

It ended up looking like the photo. I hated it and I smashed it

Improvements

I think there is many things I could have improved on, overall I think I need more practice to make this beautiful bowl idea

Sgrafifto

Plan

I wanted to make a giant mug. That's what I did by using a slab, cutting it and rapping it around, I cut the two pieces that are going to connect at the same crooked angle and then slipped and scored it together. After I made a handle and attached. I used a under glaze and sgraffito the rest of the mug.

Outcome

I am hard on myself, and now looking at the photo I think it is pretty cute. But I did end up destroying the cup.

Slab Darts

IMG_6565.jpg
Plan

I slabbed clay and cut the ends at the same angle, slipped and scored it together. Then for the darts, I cut in four triangles and then slipped and scored while pushing the corners left from the triangle cut out and I attached a small square to the bottom. Then I sgrafifto the piece

Outcome

I made the dart part too narrow so It was wobbly and could not stand on its own, Not approved by Ms. T.

Choice Project(s)

Plan

At first I wanted to make a small human but then I thought of Alice and wonderland and I thought about how the flowers would talk to her, and so I thought to make the head a flower, so it is a little flower human creature. I made the body and head separate so the pedals were easier to put on, eventually added small details by hand for more personality

Outcome

The arm did have some problems, broke off about 3 times but everything else turned out well. Eventually Ms. T had helped me

Improvements

I should have slipped and scored the arms better on this piece

Overall I was excited about this project but someone had completely smashed it while it was on the shelf.

Relief Tile

IMG_6377.jpg
IMG_6507.jpg

Plan:

I did not really have an idea of what to make, but first I made a slab and cut it into a square. Afterwards I looked at Pinterest and saw bugs, I thought it would be a cute idea so I made a ladybug.

Outcome:

It turned out well, I think I could have made the lines on the sides more straight.

Improvements,

I could have used better tool to carve the tile
